Urban Design: bottom up initiatives that inspire

Opposite to the ‘top down’ concept for urban design is Better Block, founded in Dallas, Oak Cliff by Jason Roberts and Andrew Howard.

‘Cities around the U.S. are looking for tools to help redevelop communities that enable multi-modal transportation while increasing economic development, and reducing carbon emissions. The “Better Block” project is a demonstration tool that acts as a living charrette so that communities can actively engage in the buildout process and provide feedback in real time.’

Marcus Westbury was the founder of Renew Newcastle — a not-for-profit company that has launched more than 70 new creative projects in more than 40 once empty buildings in the Newcastle CBD since 2009.
